Founded in 1890, Tokyo Dental College is Japan’s first institution dedicated to dental education. From its early development—including the establishment of its campus in Kanda-Misakicho—the College built a strong foundation for dental scholarship and has played a leading role in advancing dental education and clinical care throughout Japan.

東京歯科大学は、1890年に髙山紀齋によって創立された髙山歯科医学院を起源とする日本で最も長い歴史を有する歯科医学教育機関です。1900年に本学の建学の祖である血脇守之助が東京歯科医学院と改称し、学院長に就任しました。翌年には校舎を現在の地である神田三崎町に新設し歯科医学の教育的基盤を整備し、以後今日まで日本の歯科医学教育と歯科医療の先導的な役割を果たし発展してまいりました。

歯科医師たる前に人間たれ
血脇守之助先生が残された本学の建学の精神です。この言葉は入学式や卒業式で必ず耳にすることになり、学生、教職員、卒業生のすべての人に浸透しています。この建学の精神のもと、本学は学則の第一条の目的を定め、歯科医学教育のための高等教育機関として、日々その使命を果たし続けています。

医療全体の中の歯科の位置づけと重要性の大きな変化にも対応した教育
超高齢社会の現在、歯科医師が果たさなければならない役割は多様化しています。従来のクリニックでの診療だけでは、国民に求められている歯科医療は十分に提供できているとは言えない時代となっています。医療全体の中での歯科の位置づけや重要性は大きく変化しました。高齢の方の生活の安心と健康を確保するために、住まい・医療・介護・福祉・生活支援サービスを一体として提供する地域医療の仕組みが地域包括ケアシステムです。このシステムの中で歯科医師は歯科衛生士や歯科技工士の歯科職だけでなく、医師・看護師・言語聴覚士・管理栄養士・ケースワーカーなど多くの職種と連携し、口腔の健康を維持に貢献してウェルビーイングを提供できる存在でなければなりません。口腔機能の低下によってバランスのとれた食事が摂れないことから起こるフレイルや誤嚥性肺炎の予防、歯周病の予防や治療による糖尿病・心臓病・脳血管障害の発症や悪化予防など全身的な疾患の治療のために医科と連携した診療など歯科医師の果たすべき役割は極めて大きく変化しています。歯科は口腔の中の一分野として捉えられる時代になっています。本学は、附属・関連する医療機関が、それぞれの特徴を活かしながら医療のニーズに呼応した歯科医師を養成・育成するための総合的な教育・研修体制を整えています。教員のみならず事務系も含めた全教職員が歯科医学教育に携わっていることが本学の大きな特徴です。
Evolving Education for a New Era of Healthcare
As society rapidly ages, the role of dentists has expanded far beyond traditional clinic-based practice. Within community-based integrated care systems, dentists collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to enhance overall health and well-being through oral healthcare.
Dentistry is advancing as a discipline of oral medicine and oral science, strengthening its integration with broader medical fields. Through our distinctive affiliated institutions, we provide a comprehensive educational framework in which faculty and staff work together to prepare dentists equipped to meet the evolving needs of society.
研究の推進と大学のグローバル化を進めています
研究活動では、本学水道橋校舎に研究設備を集約し、研究に特化した管理体制を整備した口腔科学研究センターを設置しています。2017年度に私立大学研究ブランディング事業に採択された「顎骨疾患プロジェクト」では、4つのコア研究を中心とした様々な分野の研究によって多くの成果を得ることができました。2023年度からは新しい研究プロジェクトである「ウェルビーイングプロジェクト」が開始され、①生体防御ラボ、②常態・病態機能解析ラボ、③生体医工学ラボ、④組織再生ラボの4つのコア研究を中心として、基礎系・臨床系講座が一体となって健康長寿に寄与する成果を目的とした研究が精力的に進められています。大学院教育においては、2023年度文部科学省補助金事業である「次世代のがんプロフェッショナル養成プラン」で連携大学として採択されています。連携する6校の医学部・歯学部と共同したカリキュラムを構築した教育と研究が行われています。
またグローバル化を推進し、アメリカ・ヨーロッパ・アジアなどの海外姉妹校との教員の学術交流、歯学部学生のElective Study Programや海外研修制度による海外研修の機会を提供しています。研究分野においても海外の大学や研究室同士での共同研究の協定を進めて、先端的研究の推進とその成果を国際的に発信することに努めています。
東京歯科大学は、全教職員が一丸となり、これまで培ってきた実績を踏まえつつも時代に変化に敏感に反応した教育と研究を進めてまいります。そして人材を含めたその成果によって、医療や福祉をはじめとした社会貢献を継続的に発展させ、今後も人類の福祉に貢献できる大学である努力をしてまいります。
Driving Innovation in Research and Expanding Global Engagement
We have strengthened our research framework through the establishment of the Oral Health Science Center at the Suidobashi Campus, where research functions are centrally integrated. Following the Jawbone Disease Project, we are now advancing the Well-being Project, promoting healthy longevity through four core research areas that integrate basic and clinical sciences.
At the Graduate School of Dental Science, TDC, we participate in the Ministry of Education’s Next-Generation Cancer Professional Training Program, delivering collaborative education and research initiatives with faculties of medicine and dentistry.
Through academic exchange with overseas partner institutions, international study opportunities for students, and global research collaborations, we continue to expand our global engagement.
